Collecting glass pieces from a beach makes you wonder what kind of object they were a part of, whom it belonged to, and when.
In August 2022 I went camping on Käärmesaari, an island on the border of Helsinki and Espoo. The 8,2-hectare island has been a popular spot for sailors for the past 100 years. The glass on its’ pebble shores is evidence of countless evenings spent by the campfire.
In September 2022 I gathered glass in Kristineberg, Sweden. Glass and ceramic shards are plentiful there because trash used to be sunken into the sea.
The glass I collected found new life in a salt box fit for the dining table. The melted sea glass creates a crackled, sparkling tide pool on the well of the porcelain lid.
